What Breaks a Family Day in Athens
July and August between 12:00 and 16:00. The marble on the Acropolis holds heat. There is nowhere to sit in shade on the summit. A toddler in a backpack in that window is how you get a meltdown and a very expensive bottle of water.
Strollers fail on the hill, in the Agora on gravel, and on Plaka steps. They work on Dionysiou Areopagitou, in the National Garden, and inside the Acropolis Museum (lifts exist, ask at the desk). Bring a carrier for the sites and keep the stroller for the flat evening.
The other failure is over-stacking. Acropolis plus museum plus Agora plus Changing of the Guard plus Lycabettus is an adult city-break fantasy. With children, two proper stops and a long lunch is a win. A third stop is ice cream or a playground, not another ticketed ruin.
