Three days in Athens is the trip most first-time visitors actually book. It is long enough to see the Acropolis properly, walk the old centre, and still leave the city once. It is not long enough to do Delphi, Hydra and Sounion. The extra day is a choice, not a longer copy of a two-day sprint.
We run private days out of Athens every week. The pattern that works: Days 1 and 2 stay in the city. Day 3 is the outing. If you only have 48 hours, use our 2-day Athens itinerary instead. That plan spends the second afternoon at Cape Sounion because it has to. With a third day you do not need to.

How 3 Days Differs From 2
A two-day visit covers the hill, the museum, Plaka, the Agora, and usually a sunset at the Temple of Poseidon. That is a complete short stay. What it does not give you is a slow second morning, the National Archaeological Museum, or a full day that is not a race.
With three days, keep Sounion as a Day 3 option, not a squeezed Day 2. Use Day 2 for the Agora, neighbourhoods, and either the National Archaeological Museum or Lycabettus. Then pick one outing for Day 3 and protect it. Two day trips in a three-day stay is how people remember traffic, not temples.
Book the hill first

Days 1 and 2, the City Core
This table is the city core only. It is not a second hour-by-hour of our two-day guide. Use that post for walking order, lunch and the cape. Use this one to keep Day 2 in town.

On Day 1, allow about two hours on the hill and 90 minutes in the museum. They are five minutes apart and they are two tickets. The museum ticket does not get you onto the rock. Buy the hill at hhticket.gr and the museum at the museum’s own site.
On Day 2, start at the Ancient Agora while it is still cool. The rest of the day is walking: Thissio, Monastiraki, a long lunch, then either the National Archaeological Museum (allow three hours, it is not a quick look) or the funicular up Lycabettus for the view. In July and August, put any indoor museum in the 13:00 to 16:00 heat window.

Tickets, Heat and Getting Around
Buy the Acropolis timed ticket before you fly. In peak season the 08:00 and 09:00 slots go first. The museum is easier to buy closer to the day, still on its own site. Other archaeological sites in central Athens are separate tickets in 2026. Confirm prices on the official pages the week you travel, because the old five-day Athens combo is no longer the default advice.
Summer heat is the real constraint, not walking distance. The historic core is compact. Marble radiates after 11:00. Start outdoor sites at opening, eat and museum through the middle of the day, and save views for after 18:00. Month-by-month weather is in the best time to visit Athens.
Stay within a 15-minute walk of the Acropolis if you can: Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki or Syntagma. Neighbourhood trade-offs are in where to stay in Athens. From the airport, a private ATH to city transfer is the simple arrival. For Day 3 to Piraeus (Hydra), use the city to Piraeus transfer so you are not guessing gates with a suitcase.
If You Have a Fourth Day
Add a second outing, or a second city morning, not both at full pace. A clean four-day shape is three days as above plus either Delphi or Hydra, whichever you did not use on Day 3. Do not write a separate four-day itinerary in your head that repeats Days 1 and 2 again.
Cruise passengers with one day should ignore this post and use one day in Athens from a cruise. A long layover is a different problem again: long layover Acropolis.
