Acropolis Museum Tickets and Hours (2026): Not the Hill

The Acropolis Museum is not the Acropolis. It sits at the foot of the hill on Dionysiou Areopagitou, it has its own ticket, and you buy that ticket on the museum’s own website. A hill ticket from hhticket.gr will not get you in.

No. The official museum FAQ is blunt: tickets to the Acropolis archaeological site and tickets to the Acropolis Museum are independent. You can visit one, the other, or both. You cannot use one ticket at both doors.

General admission is €20 all year. Reduced admission is €10. Reduced and free tickets are issued at the museum desk with the right ID, not always through the e-shop. The museum publishes the exact reduced and free categories on its plan-your-visit page. Bring the document, not a photo of a screenshot.

Online tickets are individual, with a fixed date and time. Buy them if you are visiting on a busy weekend or a cruise morning. Walk-up at the desk still works on quieter days, with the risk of a wait at the door rather than at a ticket window.

Ground-floor shop and café do not require a ticket. The second-floor restaurant does, via a free admission ticket from the desk if you are only eating. That rule is easy to miss if you arrive hungry after the hill.

Hours change by season and by weekday. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Always check the museum’s plan-your-visit page the day before, because holiday hours shrink.

Closed dates usually include 1 January, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday, 25 December and 26 December. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are often shorter. If your only museum window is a public holiday, read the official list rather than a blog table, including this one.

Hill first, museum second, on a normal day. The rock is hotter, more crowded, and has almost no shade. The museum is air-conditioned. Doing the climb at 08:00 and walking downhill to the museum at 10:30 is the sequence that matches the weather.

Reverse it if your timed hill slot is after 16:00, or if a heat closure has shut the Acropolis in the afternoon, which has happened in recent summers. The museum still works as a midday shelter. Families with small children often do the museum first so the climb is not the first argument of the day. Practical notes are in Athens with kids.

The two sites are a five-minute walk apart. From the southeast hill entrance you are already beside the museum. From Plaka or Monastiraki, walk up Dionysiou Areopagitou. Metro: Acropoli on Line 2.

You enter over glass floors above an excavated neighbourhood. The slope galleries hold the sculptures that once stood on the sides of the hill. The Parthenon Gallery on the top floor lines up the surviving frieze in the original order, with casts where the London pieces sit. That room is why the museum exists. Give it time.

The Caryatids from the Erechtheion are here. The ones on the hill are copies. If you only ‘do the Acropolis’ and skip this building, you skip the original faces.

Bags: follow the museum’s current bag rules at the door. Large backpacks are a problem. Water and a hat matter more on the hill than inside.
