How to Get from Athens to Santorini (2026): Ferry vs Flight

Santorini from Athens is a transport problem, not a sightseeing day. A same-day return is not realistic: even the fastest boats need about five hours each way, and they do not give you a caldera afternoon. You fly, or you sail from Piraeus, then you stay on the island.

This post is Santorini only. For which Greek port serves which island, use Athens to the Greek islands. For Mykonos, which often uses Rafina, use Athens to Mykonos.

Fly if your Santorini time is short, if you land at ATH in the morning and want to be on the island for sunset, or if you get badly seasick. The air hop is about 45 minutes. Add check-in, security, and a taxi from Santorini Airport (JTR) to Fira or Oia. That door-to-door block is still usually shorter than the boat.

Sail if you want the crossing, if you have luggage you would rather not check, if you are island-hopping onward, or if the flight fare has jumped above a high-speed seat. The boat is the trip for many people. It is also the one the meltemi can cancel.

Piraeus. Santorini (Thera) ferries use the main port southwest of the city, then arrive at Athinios on the island. Rafina is the wrong default for this route. If your booking confirmation says Rafina, you are not on a standard Santorini sailing, or you have the wrong island.

Lavrio is also the wrong port for Santorini. Kea and Kythnos leave from there. Do not mix the three Athens ports because a map looks similar.

Treat published times as a band, not a promise. High-speed services are often around five hours. Conventional boats commonly run six to eight hours, and some are longer with stops. Operators and seasonal timetables change. Check the sailing you actually bought the week you travel.

You arrive at Athinios, a steep port, not in Fira. Taxis queue and surge when several boats land together. Buses climb to Fira. If you have a hotel transfer on Santorini, that is a Santorini problem, not an Athens one. We get you to Piraeus on time. We do not meet you at Athinios.

From Athens Airport, the drive to Piraeus is the fragile part of a same-day sailing. Bags, immigration, and Attiki Odos traffic all sit between the gate and the ship. From a city hotel, use the Athens city to Piraeus transfer. Metro Line 3 also reaches the port, which is fine with a small bag and a loose timetable. It is a poor idea with two suitcases and a 08:00 high-speed departure.

Gates at Piraeus run along a long waterfront (E1 to E12 on many tickets). Give yourself 45 to 60 minutes at the port. Walking the wrong way with luggage is how people miss boats they ‘arrived in time’ for.

In July and August, book the popular morning high-speed sailings weeks ahead. Weekends and the 15 August holiday sell out. Shoulder months are kinder. Use the operator or a proper comparison site, then read whether you still need a paper boarding pass at the port.

The meltemi can cancel catamarans at short notice. Conventional ferries more often still run. If you have an international flight out of ATH the next morning, do not plan a late high-speed back from Santorini the evening before. Leave a night in Athens.
