Athens to Mykonos goes wrong at the port, not at the island. The ticket says Rafina or it says Piraeus. Those are different roads, different drive times from the airport, and different boats. Treat them as the same ‘Athens ferry’ and you miss the sailing.

Rafina or Piraeus for Mykonos?
If you land at ATH and go straight to the island, Rafina is usually the rational port: 15 to 20 kilometres from the airport, a short drive, and many Mykonos, Tinos and Andros routes. Piraeus still runs Mykonos sailings. It is the right port when that is what you bought, or when you are coming from a city hotel and the Piraeus timetable fits better.

The flight is about 45 minutes. Add airport time in Athens and a transfer from Mykonos Airport into town or to a beach hotel. Door to door, flying still wins when you land at ATH at noon and want to be on Mykonos for dinner.
The ferry wins on cost in many shoulder-season searches, on luggage, and if you enjoy the crossing. High-speed boats from Rafina can be the sweet spot: shorter sea time than a slow Piraeus conventional, without a second airport. They also cancel more readily in strong wind.

How Long the Boat Takes
Expect a wide band: about 2.5 to 5.5 hours depending on port, high-speed versus conventional, and stops. Rafina high-speed services are often toward the shorter end. A slow boat from Piraeus is the long day. Check your departure, not a blog average, the week you travel.
You arrive at Mykonos (typically the new port at Tourlos for many conventional and some high-speed craft, with other landings possible). Town is a transfer, not a walk with three suitcases. Budget for that on the island side.
Airport to the Port Without Missing Check-in
Rafina check-in often closes 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Add baggage reclaim. A 20-minute map drive is not a 20-minute plan. In summer afternoons the same road is 35 to 40 minutes. Book ATH to Rafina if the ferry is the day’s only job. KTEL buses exist and are cheaper. They are a poor match for a tight Mykonos sailing after a delayed long-haul.
If the ticket is Piraeus, use ATH to Piraeus and allow closer to an hour on the road, more on a Friday. From a hotel, city to Piraeus or a booked run out to Rafina if that is the port. We need the pin and the gate, not ‘the Mykonos boat’.

A morning European arrival plus a late-afternoon Rafina sailing can work. An intercontinental landing plus an early afternoon boat is how people buy a hotel in Athens they did not want. When in doubt, sleep in the city and sail the next morning.

Book summer Mykonos boats two to four weeks ahead, earlier for August weekends. The 15 August holiday is a peak. Keep a digital ticket and read whether you still collect a paper pass at the port.
