Athens Airport Transfer: Every Option and What It Costs (2026)

You land at Athens International Airport (ATH, also called Eleftherios Venizelos). You need to get to your hotel in the city. You have four real options: private transfer, official taxi, the metro, or an express bus. You have probably also heard of Uber.

This guide covers all of them. Honestly. Including the parts that other guides leave out.

Note on pricing: transfer fares in Greece are set by Greek law for certain routes and fluctuate based on time of day, season, and the specific destination. The figures in this guide are drawn from verified 2026 sources. Always confirm current fares at the time of your trip, as regulated rates are updated periodically by Greek authorities. For Theo Travel's current private transfer fares, contact us directly or request a booking.

Private Airport Transfer

What It Is

A private transfer is a pre-booked vehicle, allocated exclusively to your group, that meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and drives you directly to your hotel or any other destination in Athens.

The key difference from a taxi is the experience: there is no queue at Exit 3, no negotiating, no uncertainty about whether the driver knows your hotel. You are picked up, your luggage is handled, and you are driven to your destination without any of the friction that comes with landing in a new city.

What Is Included

With Theo Travel, every private transfer includes: English-speaking professional driver, Mercedes vehicle (sedan, minivan, or Sprinter depending on group size), free WiFi on board, flight monitoring (your driver tracks your arrival time, so a delay is not a problem), meet and greet in the arrivals hall, and a fixed price agreed in advance.

No hidden charges. No night surcharges. No surprises.

Who It Is Best For

Families with children and luggage, groups of five or more, business travellers who value their time, and anyone arriving late at night in a new city. For couples travelling light who are happy to queue at a taxi rank, the taxi is a perfectly fine option. For everyone else, a private transfer is the right call.

Our vehicles seat 1 to 16 passengers. For groups larger than 4, a private transfer is often comparable in price to multiple taxis when you factor in the combined taxi fares.

Official Airport Taxi (The Yellow Taxi)

The Flat Rate to the City Centre

Athens taxis are yellow and operate under government-regulated fares. For the route from Athens Airport to the city centre, there is a legally mandated flat rate. As of 2026, this rate is approximately EUR 40 during the day and EUR 55 at night (night tariff typically applies between 24:00 and 05:00, though the exact hours are set by regulation and subject to revision).

This flat rate is per taxi, not per person. A family of four sharing a taxi to the city centre pays the same as a solo traveller.

Important: this flat rate applies specifically to the city centre. If your destination is a neighbourhood further from the centre, or if your hotel is in a less central area, confirm with the driver whether the flat rate applies or whether the meter runs.

Where to Find the Taxi

The official taxi rank at Athens Airport is at Exit 3 in the Arrivals level. During peak hours, especially in summer, queues can be significant. Wait times of 20 to 30 minutes at busy times are not unusual.

What the Flat Rate Includes

The regulated flat fare to the city centre includes toll charges, luggage, VAT, and all surcharges for the airport pickup. There should be no additional charges for the city-centre route. If a driver asks for extra on top of the flat rate for this specific route, you are within your rights to decline.

Cards vs Cash

Not all Athens taxis accept credit cards. Carrying cash is safer unless you have confirmed in advance that your driver accepts card payments. Have euros available.

Metro (Line 3, Blue Line)

How It Works

Athens Metro Line 3 (the Blue Line) runs directly between Athens Airport and the city centre. The airport station is connected to the main terminal by a covered walkway, approximately five minutes on foot.

The metro is fast, reliable, and cheap. For solo travellers or couples with manageable luggage, it is a perfectly good option.

Cost and Journey Time

A single metro ticket from the airport to the city costs approximately EUR 9 per adult (prices are set by Athens Urban Transport Organisation, OASA, and are updated periodically: verify the current fare). The journey takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes to Syntagma station in the city centre.

If you are travelling as a couple, two metro tickets cost approximately EUR 18: not dramatically cheaper than a taxi split between two people.

The Luggage Reality

Metro carriages are not equipped with dedicated luggage space. In peak hours the trains are crowded. With large suitcases, navigating a busy Athens metro carriage is uncomfortable for you and inconvenient for other passengers. For travellers with significant luggage, the metro is not the optimal choice.

For solo travellers with a single bag arriving in a reasonable hour, it is excellent value.

Express Bus (X95, X96, and Others)

How It Works

Athens Airport is served by a network of express buses that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is their key advantage: if you land at 03:00 in the morning, the buses are still running.

The main routes:

X95

Airport to Syntagma Square (central Athens). Approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

X96

Airport to Piraeus port. Approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

X93

Airport to the Kifissos bus terminal.

Cost

A single express bus ticket costs approximately EUR 5.50 to EUR 6 per adult (verify current OASA fares). This is the cheapest way to get from the airport to the city.

The Trade-Off

The trade-off for the low price is time. The X95 takes 60 to 90 minutes in normal conditions and can take longer in heavy Athens traffic. It makes stops and follows a fixed route, so if your hotel is not close to Syntagma, you will have additional travel to do at the other end.

For a late-night arrival when you just need to get into the city and price is the priority, the express bus delivers. For a holiday arrival with luggage and a family, the time cost is real.

Uber, Bolt and FreeNow at Athens Airport

How They Actually Work in Greece

This section is important, because Uber in Athens is not the same as Uber in London or New York.

Greece has strict regulations on private hire vehicles. As a result, Uber in Athens does not operate private cars (UberX). It operates exclusively as UberTAXI: when you book via the Uber app in Athens, you are booking a licensed yellow taxi driver. The same applies to Bolt.

This means the fare is not calculated by an algorithm independent of local regulation. It is the same taxi metre, and in the case of the airport, the same regulated flat rate.

Net result: Uber and Bolt at Athens Airport dispatch a licensed yellow taxi at the regulated flat fare, plus a small app booking fee of approximately EUR 1 to 2. You will typically not save money compared to walking to the taxi rank. You might pay slightly more.

The benefit is the convenience of app-based booking and cashless payment if your driver has it enabled.

FreeNow (formerly Beat) operates on the same model and is more widely used among Athenians than Uber.

If you prefer the comfort of a pre-arranged booking via an app and do not want a private transfer, FreeNow is the most popular app-based option in Athens.

Which Option Is Right for You

Solo Traveller, Light Bag, Arriving During the Day

The metro is excellent value. EUR 9, 40 to 50 minutes, direct to the centre. Take Line 3 to Syntagma and walk or take a local taxi to your hotel.

Couple, One Bag Each, Arriving During the Day

The taxi is the simplest option. EUR 40 flat rate split between two people is EUR 20 each. No negotiation needed, no queue at the metro, straight to your hotel door.

Family with Children and Luggage

Private transfer. The ability to book child seats in advance, load all luggage without managing a train or bus, and arrive directly at your hotel makes the private transfer the practical choice.

Group of 5 or More

Private transfer with a minivan or Sprinter. Often comparable to or cheaper than the cost of multiple taxis, with significantly better logistics.

Late Night Arrival (01:00 to 05:00)

The metro stops running around midnight. The X95 bus runs 24 hours but is slow. For late-night arrivals, the choice is between a taxi (at the higher night flat rate of approximately EUR 55) or a private transfer. A pre-booked private transfer with confirmed pickup is significantly less stressful than finding a taxi at 02:00.

Business Traveller

Private transfer. Fixed price, professional driver, no waiting, direct to the meeting or hotel.
